Well, here I am again. Talking about the future. Forever the optimist. With not a smile but a grin, and that first step, as we all know "when you put one foot in front of the other, soon you'll be walking out the door". Or so I learned as a child.
Agreed, tomorrow being the future is not so far away, and it should well be within my grasp and hence easy to conceive. But I remain convinced that as we move through life we are constantly pushing through the bubble that is 'now', as though life is really like the surface tension that is created on water that is almost overfilled a glass, and we are always breaking through that surface tension with the constant 'now', unable to physically touch the past or reach into the future, those things are gone and yet to happen. Our evidence of a past is poorly remembered stories, litter, pictures, and artifacts.
I do not consider myself a collector of artifacts. But that does not mean that I am not. One look around the spare room of our apartment confirms my collectible nature. A room filled with cd's, Lp's, 45's, books about bands or musicians, various magazines about bands & musicians. A room filled with memories. A room filled with what was once someone's hope, promise, hard work and artist expression. Tossed out into the world, to be enjoyed, to collect dust on a shelf, or to remain unsold on some anonymous record store rack.
We all have our favorites. Music or songs that we enjoy for one reason or another, or sometimes for no particular reason. I have more than some, fewer than others. Just because I show up each week to host this radio show, "It's a nice world to visit" that does not make me an authority on taste. I think rather that it means I have the confidence that I have good taste. A slighter different matter, one better left without debate to be sure.
Confidence and the sheer will to show up each week to share with the world, a piece of myself. That defines me to a dee.
Tune in Saturday 9 am to Noon PST, for what I am sure will be another fine episode of "It's a nice world to visit" on the Portland radio authority (http://www.praradio.org)
